Happy birthday me
Today I turn 39 years old. I can hardly believe that I am about to enter my last year as a “thirty-something.” Was 1980 truly that long ago? I used to dread the thought of reaching 40. Actually, I used to dread the idea of being 30 when I was in my twenties. It just seemed so old and 'over the hill' and a long time to live.I guess we all do a little, worry about getting older, dying, not accomplishing everything we really want to in life. While I don’t have it all figured it out, I now believe that not having it all figured out is the joy and possibly the secret to leading your best life.It would probably be very boring if everything was perfect and challenge free right?
So what I'm going to do is take a second today to acknowledge my journey and not the individual struggles, make a list of all things that I am grateful for, 39 things as I turn 39 and I'm sure 40 wont be as bad. Here goes......
2. Having a wonderful family that cares for me and will support me no matter what.
3. Snuggling with my babies before bed and listening to them fall asleep
4. Sunshine on my face
5. The smell of rain or the soil rather when it rains.
6. When the skies get covered with clouds.
7. My mom’s house on a Friday afternoon.
8. The first sip of a latte and warm cookies on a cold day
9. When my kids come running to the door when I get home from work.
10. My cute little clinic which gives me my happy space.
11. Coming home to a clean house (doesn’t happen often but when it does it’s amazing)
12. Working in a relaxed environment doing a job that is helping people
13. Cooking a great meal and enjoying it with friends and family
14. That I have had the opportunity to taste some of the finest things in the world and I am open to willing to try anything edible :)
15. Putting on comfy sweats at the end of a tiring day
16. Music and having the ability to appreciate it.So important especially since I have lost the ability of hearing from one ear and my auditory senses are heightened because of it.
17. Dancing and being told I have 'the rhythm'
18. Baking with my kids
19. Chocolate.
20. That my body backs me up despite of me being so unkind and uncaring towards it.
21. That I have the ability to make sure my resolve remains strong even though there are days when I want to yell, scream and don't want to go on anymore.
22. That I’ve had the opportunity to visit many wonderful and amazing places around the world (and I look forward to visiting many many more)
23. My education and the opportunities it can afford me should I choose to pursue them.
24. The friends I’ve made along the way (so far)
25. The friends I have lost along the way. They've taught me such valuable lessons in life.
26. Winning FB and Insta contests from time to time!
27. The ability to buy food and necessities when we need them
28. The smell of clean clothes dried in the sun.
29. The sound of the ocean
30. The lovely, cozy feeling of getting into my bed at night
31. Fresh flowers
32. Puns and grammar jokes!
33. Brain teasers and crossword puzzles
34. Living so close to my parents
35. When a kind person opens the door for me or lets me go in front of them in traffic when I have to cross the road
36. Having a gym so close to me and meeting some of the nicest people I know there.
37. An air conditioned room on a really hot day and water with ice.
38. Getting engrossed in a good book and having the time to read it
39. Looking through pictures of all of our amazing memories
We all have many things in our lives to be grateful for. From our children to the roofs over our heads and the food on our plates. Creating a list like this reminds me that despite my challenges there’s much to be thankful for and to look forward to experiencing. So yes, as I prepare to blow out 39 candles on my cake, I hope that I will continue to pass as someone younger while I still can. And once that stops, I’ll do everything I can to still feel young and live my life to its fullest potential. Happy birthday to me -- may I stay forever young.
